The century-old Chang'an Automobile is the epitome of China's modern industrial development, and also the participant of the rise of the state and the nation. In the 1980s, the company introduced Suzuki, Ford, Mazda and other international partners. Chang'an Automobile realizes due to the lack of autonomy in the joint-venture process that holding right does not equal control stake, and distribution of profits does not equal to distribution of benefits; relying solely on joint venture and cooperation with foreign partners without independent core technology, the Chinese auto industry will not be able to control its own destiny. For example, in the co-production of a model with a foreign partner, the foreign party required the production must be in accordance with the existing technology and did not allow the slightest change, even forbade the Chinese side approaching the core technology. Although the Chinese side occupies relative or absolute controlling stake in the joint venture, the foreign side by virtue of product output controls core ends of the industry chain such as production line and parts procurement, key technologies and manufacturing processes, marketing channels and service delivery model, etc. to realize the actual control of the joint venture. On the surface, equity decides the right to gain; in fact, the foreign side through such means as technology commission, staff support, CKD bonus, etc. transfers a large amount of profits, even through the establishment of wholly owned and holding companies extends their commercial activities to the marketing, finance, credit and other aspects to grab the high profits. It is this harsh reality that firms Chang'an Automobile's faith and determination of innovation.
In global view, whether it is the rise of America in the 1920s or the post-war revival of the Federal Republic of Germany or the takeoff of Japan in the 1970s and 1980s, all are driven by the rapid growth of the automotive industry. Because of the large-scale output value, long industrial chain, wide range of radiation and strong impetus and the capital, technology, labor and consumer-intensive characteristics, automotive industry has always been a strategic pillar industry in developed countries. In 2003 the company built China's first overseas R & D Center in Turin, Italy, mainly engaged in vehicle design; in 2008 established an R & D center in Yokohama, Japan, mainly engaged in automotive interior and refined craft; in 2010 established an R & D center in Nottingham, United Kingdom, mainly engaged in vehicle engine and transmission; in 2011 established China's first R & D center in the U.S. "automobile city" Detroit, mainly engaged in vehicle chassis. The company has also established five local R & D centers in Chongqing, Shanghai, Beijing, Harbin and Jiangxi, basically forming a global R & D system involving "five countries and nine cities with different focus" and achieving 24-hour uninterrupted collaborative research and development. Currently, the company owns more than 30 patents on new energy vehicles, achieves cumulative sales of more than 900 vehicles for demonstration runs of new energy vehicles with the mileage more than 40 million kilometers, making Chang'an the new energy vehicle enterprise with the most extensive area of demonstration runs, involving the largest number of industries for demonstration runs and the largest number of vehicles under demonstration runs. Relying on independent innovation, Chang'an own brand car sales achieve rapid growth year after year; to 2009 its own brand vehicle production reached 1.425 million units, making Chang'an the only auto company in China with own brand car sales over one million units.
